Program Background

MARVEL is a programme of Wahana Visi Indonesia working with coastal communities in Kabupaten Lombok Timur. This workshop is the ecotourism governance component of that work.

1. Programme context#

Coastal villages on the East Lombok coast combine mangrove protection, small-scale fisheries and a developing visitor economy on the same stretch of shoreline. Where tourism grows faster than the rules that govern it, the pressure lands first on the mangrove and on the people who depend on it most directly.

The programme response is procedural rather than promotional: define how ecotourism operates, define what is protected, and define how the money is shared — then train the people who will run it.

2. Partner agencies named in the workshop#

• MARVEL – Wahana Visi Indonesia — programme owner and facilitator.
• BPSPL Denpasar — coastal and marine resource management agency; session on mangrove conservation management and spatial function.
• SAR Lombok Timur — search and rescue agency; session on water rescue in mangrove forest.

3. The two target villages#

Desa Sugian and Desa Seruni Mumbul (destination: Ekowisata Mangrove Denda Seruni) both border mangrove forest that local communities protect and use. Both have community groups active in tourism. Neither has, at the time of writing, a formally adopted ecotourism SOP package — which is the gap this work addresses.
